Papa's Heart Surgery 2014

In October 2014, Papa was having some problems breathing and went to the ER. After some tests he was sent to the Heart Hospital in Wichita where they determined that a simple stint would not be enough but that he needed bypass surgery. Papa had this surgery done back in 1985. Since Papa is 84 we weren't sure if he would be able to have the surgery because of his age. When Papa had his first heart attack, he started walking every single day. The doctor said that he was actually in better shape than a lot of his 50 year old patients so as far as he was concerned he could have the surgery it was just up to Papa. Papa decided that if the doctor thought he could handle it and it would improve his quality of life then he would go for it. I was happy Papa decided to do the surgery but also nervous. I kind of wished I was 3 again like I was the first time when I really didn't know what was happening!

Papa was only there for I think about 2 weeks total. We all took various trips to see him and Granny while they were there. Fortunately he came through the surgery and recovered really well. The first thing he wanted to do was walk. He walked as much as they would let them in the hospital and at home because he knew that would help him get better.

This was before Papa's surgery. Notice my mom looking up in the back. She was watching the Royals in the World Series or playoffs. Fun fact: the last time the Royals won the world series was in 1985 when Papa had his first heart surgery! We were hoping this was a sign that they would win, even though we weren't wanting Papa to be having heart problems again. They didn't win in 2014 but spoiler alert - 2015 Champs!
